ROYAL OAK EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
Minutes of the Representative Assembly Meeting
January 25, 2005*

Kimball
Media Center

I.          Call to Order at 4:20 p.m.

II.          Dave Dursum, Tom Shorkey and Tom Neville spoke for ‘Friend of Royal Oak’ as the assembly stuffed and stamped envelopes for the bond effort.
           A.   Bond issues were discussed
                  1.    
We have 12,000 parents approximately
                  2.    
Remember to turn in your ‘Yes Voter Identification Sheet’
                  3.    
We need 9,000 to win
                  4.    
2 out of 10 houses in Royal Oak have students in the school system
                  5.    
Senior citizens seem to be on our side
                          a.     
Callers said more than half support the bond
                  6.    
This Friday there will be a fundraiser at Woody’s
                  7.    
Kimball and Dondero are the only schools that have made AYG (Adequate Yearly Growth) two years in a row in Oakland County
                  8.    
Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday there will be phone banks
                         Emails went out

III.             The minutes from the December meeting were approved

IV.            Reports
            A.  
Treasurer- Beth Morrison
                  1.    
Presented the treasurer’s report

                        B.    Executive Vice President- Marcia Rauschendorfer
                  1.    
Topics discussed at the last Joint Committee were explained 
                          a.     
A representative from MEA financial services presented information about early retirement incentives.
                                                   i.      A committee will be formed to look over the plans presented to the district over the past two years.
                           b.     40 days were approved from the sick bank.

                                  2.     Topics to bring up at the next Joint Committee
                            a.      The snow day issue
                                                     i.      Teachers who call in sick ahead of the notification are docked their time
                            b.     Highly Qualified issue

C.   PAC- Betty Ann Garlak
1.    
Wanted to thank Paul Chambers for getting SOMEA to approve the $2,000 to give to ‘Friends of Royal Oak’
2.    
There are still opportunities to help out with the bond
3.    
Turn in your ‘Yes Voter Sheets’ and your $10 donations
4.    
Absentee ballots are available from Betty or the City of Royal Oak
5.     Wanted to thank Nancy at Dondero and the senior officers for making calls in support of the bond
6.    
Discussed the results of the PAC Drive
        a.      41% (176/421) teachers contributed 
              
Lincoln Early Childhood Center had the highest percent of contributions (90%)

D.   Program Vice President- Chris Bear
1.    
Contact Chris if you would like to help out with the Retirement Dinner

E.    President- Sid Kardon
1.    
Discussed three ongoing committees
         a.     
ERI (Early Retirement Incentive)
         b.    
Highly Qualified
         c.    
Specials Teacher’s assignment
2.    
Discussed the importance of the Bond passing
         a.     
Educational opportunities for students
         b.    
Negotiations
         c.    
Building Problems
3.    
Explained that the grievance for not allowing union representation at a meeting with an administrator was on the third step (a hearing with Tom Shorkey)

V.             New Business
                A.   Vince Caruso wanted feedback on the idea of looking to change the calendar to add hours to the High School year
                     1.     Should we cut into the Christmas and/or Winter Break?
                     2.     It was decided that the hours first needed to be counted

VI.            Adjournment
                A.   The meeting was adjourned after motion was passed
