JOINT COMMITTEE
APRIL 9, 2001

 IN ATTENDANCE:  S. Gaynor, S. Standel, R. Wood, K. Cornell, L. Flynn, K. Pino, S. Kardon

1.    MINUTES:  Minutes from March 5, 2001 were approved as written.

2. SICK BANK:  Approved one request for Sick Bank for 8 days, leaving a balance of 108  sick days. 

3.    CHARLOTTE DANIELSON WORKSHOP:  This will be held May 31 for Evaluation Committee members as well as mentors. 

4.   TEACHERS AS PROFESSIONALS:  Discussion of teacher attendance at the March 15 Professional Development Day.  It would be helpful if this could be addressed with ROEA members.   

5.     JOB FAIR:  There will be a Job Fair on May 16, 2001 at Churchill.  A pamphlet with information was distributed.  There will be openings in several areas. 

6.    LAYOFFS AND NEW HIRES:  There will be a need for a minimal number of layoffs, primarily due for teachers returning from leave.   

7.    TTI OPTIONS:  Discussion of options available to teachers.  People who have questions  should contact Rick Wood.

8.      PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT—2001-02;  A total of 5 days is mandated by the State     next year. They will be as follows:

                First 2 days of school = 1 P.D. Day

2 full release days     = 2       

2nd and 3rd Tuesdays  = 1       

2 half days                = 1       “ 

    A plan is being developed for Professional Development.  Send ideas/suggestions to a   member of Curriculum Sub-Committee or to the Instruction Office. 

9.    NEW SPECIAL EDUCATION LAWS:  Special Education staff has requested in-service as soon as the rules are approved by the State. This will be shared with Mike Dombrowski.

10.  CALENDAR:  Discussion of conflict within the county, especially for Winter Break. This may be of concern to the ROEA membership. 

11.  ESL:  Discussion of issues regarding ESL students and staff.  There was a question about a student who transferred from Lamphere.  This was a Superintendents’ agreement.  

Discussion of the ESL program at Addams.  A formal response will be sent to the ROEA regarding the situation. 

12.  Kimball has a number of ESL students.  Kay Cornell will talk with the administration to address needs. 

13.  CLASS SIZE RELIEF:  Approved one Class Size Relief request for Dondero. 

14.  CHEATING POLICY:  Discussion of some teachers’ feelings that the district policy needs  to be stronger.  A few ROEA members will meet with Dr. Gaynor to discuss this further. 

15.  SCHOOLS OF CHOICE:  Buildings are to assess achievement needs and to collaboratively design a plan that is sent to Kay Cornell for approval. 

16.  REMOVAL OF DISCIPLINARY LETTER FROM PERSONNEL FILE:  Sandra Standel will notify people about the procedure to notify Personnel that he/she would like something removed from a file. 

17.  SPECIAL EDUCATION POSITION:  Questions were raised about a position that has been increased without the job being posted.  Sid will discuss this with Michael Dombrowski.
