JOINT COMMITTEE

JANUARY 4, 2001

BOARD OFFICE, ROOM B—1:00 P.M.

IN ATTENDANCE: S. GAYNOR, S. STANDEL, K. CORNELL, L. FLYNN, S. KARDON, K. PINO

  1. CALENDAR 2001-02: Discussion of February break dates. The Royal Oak dates do not align with other districts. The ISD is working on this and will send us out a recommendation so that districts are not on break for the second student count date of the year. This topic is postponed until February when we have more information.
  2. CONTRACT PRINTING: The signatures will be on the contract by the end of this week. Then the contract can be printed.
  3. SUPPLEMENTAL: Discussion of 3 requests for supplemental pay. One was granted. No agreement was reached was reached on the other two—one was tabled until Joint Committee has more information. In the future, when someone knows he/she will be out for an extended period of time, the supplemental issue will be settled beforehand. In other cases, Sandra and Standel and Linda Flynn will work out the secondary issues and Sid Kardon and Sandra Standel will work out the elementary issues.
  4. COMPUTER USER AGREEMENT: The ROEA will put a letter in The Reporter in support of the Computer Use Agreement. The agreement will be sent to teachers after February 1, 2001 for signatures. The new user agreement is acceptable to the district and the union.
  5. TEACHER LEADER: This committee can’t meet the timelines established during negotiations. Consequently, the timelines will be revised with the committee recommendation due to Joint Committee by December, 2001. A new letter of agreement will be written and signed by both parties.
  6. SICK LEAVE ON SNOW DAYS: Should teachers who call in sick be charged with a sick day when a snow day is called? This is well-established past practice and staff members will continue to be charged with sick days, P.E. days, etc., even if a snow day is called after the teacher requests the day.
  7. SEMS: Andy Linell and Vince Caruso will do a survey to get feedback on the new system.
  8. TEACHERS USE OF PERSONAL CARS IN THEIR JOBS: Teachers can use Drivers Ed cars if they wish. Any equipment needed for the transportation of students will be purchased by the district.
  9. COMP DAYS FOR TRAVELING TEACHERS: Discussion of when teachers can take comp days—before holidays, Fridays, Mondays, etc. There is such a shortage that Fridays and Mondays are really a problem. This is tabled until the February meeting. A kindergarten teacher is also traveling and there needs to be clarification on the amount of planning time she is getting.
  10. LINCOLN BUILDING ISSUE: Lincoln continues to miss out on some communications. They are not at the level of technology and therefore E-Mail is a not available to them. However, the district will work to be sure that all communications that go to buildings also go to Lincoln.
  11. AGENDA DISCUSSION PRIOR TO MEETING: There was an agreement that Sid Kardon and Sandra Standel would review agenda items before the meeting. The agenda items are coming in late so there is no time to gather information. Consequently, the meetings are longer than necessary and topics are often postponed. From now on, there will be a discussion prior to Joint Committee regarding agenda topics.
  12. MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY: A committee is going to work on Diversity issues and productive, educational ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. If anyone is interested in being on the Diversity Task Force, please let your principal know.

Recorder: Kay Cornell
