Bob Eberhardt

Bob Eberhardt

Here's the text of JoAnn Khachaturian's introduction of Bob:

This evening it is my pleasure to do the honors for Bob Eberhardt. We started at Dondero within a year of each other, however, I must admit that in the late sixties, with the student body and staff so large I really don’t remember too much of Bob. I asked Bob to share some of his memories of his first year at Dondero and he told me that there is one he will never forget. Bob and Gary Bryce were assigned a study hail. Gary, Mr. Gruff, Rough and Tough Guy, had one year of seniority over Bob. As soon as Bob walked in, Gary told Bob, "That’s it, it’s all yours" and left, leaving Bob with between 75-90 students. Well, it seems that Gary’s confidence in Bob was well placed, he made it though that year and 32 more.

The first memories I have of Bob are as a coach, and he’s done a lot of it, in three different sports. He coached freshman football for seven years, back when Dondero had a winning team. He coached freshman basketball for one year and junior varsity basketball for twelve years. His most embarrassing coaching experience occurred at a basketball game at Pershing H.S. During half-time in the locker room Bob squatted down to explain a play to the team. Bill Boyd, whom I’m sure many of you remember, noticed that the back seam of Bob trousers was ripped wide-open. He had Bob remove them and he taped them back together. Bob wasn’t too sure that the tape would hold and was, to say the least, anxious and uncomfortable for the rest of the game.

For the past eleven years, Bob has been Dondero’s varsity Golf Coach. I can personally attest to his concern for his players’ academic achievements. Now don’t misunderstand me, he is an excellent coach as well, in fact Bob was named OAA Golf Coach of the year for Division 4 and Division 3 for the last three years. Congratulations, again Bob!

We’ve been through a lot together. Remember having to pack up everything in our rooms for three years in a row every June during renovation? Compared to that, cleaning out our rooms this year will be a piece of cake. Or how about our taking turns with Fred Fuhr and Paul Voegtler confiscating open pop bottles and cans from students in the halls. What a novel idea, enforcing school rules. Or better yet, our old smoke filled faculty lounge, if you could call it that, in the basement, where we would listen to the wise counsel of George Regetz, Dick Hursh, Dick Hemmila, and others.

Over the last several years many of our fellow teachers have preceded us in retirement, in fact, Bob and I are the senior members on the third floor. We have often felt more like parents than colleagues with our fellow third floor teachers. On many days, if I hadn’t been able to vent some of my frustrations with Bob, I don’t know that I would have made it through the day. Thanks Bob for being such a good friend.

Bob, it’s been a pleasure teaching with you. Your retirement begins a new chapter in your life, with your wife Frances and daughter Cora. May it be filled with happiness, health, success and fun!
